What changes for this device
Before
The author encountered an unavailable HP Laser 1008a driver on an Apple Silicon Mac while the printer hardware still worked.
After
SpliX-derived conversion and native CUPS/IOKit connections restore USB printing on selected HP Laser models.
The author reports on X using Claude through roughly 30–40 prompts and iterations and publishes the process and code. The README's author-tested scope is Apple Silicon, macOS 26 and USB on HP Laser 1003/1006/1008 a/w. This does not establish Wi-Fi, all HP models or Intel Mac support. Installation changes administrator-level system configuration; read the uninstall script and split licensing as well.
A good fit for
People with matching hardware and OS who can inspect installation scripts and manage CUPS queues.
Not a good fit for
People using Wi-Fi only, outside the author's test scope, or unable to accept system configuration changes.
Proposed reproduction checks
- Record macOS, CPU, USB device identity and driver version.
- Test real documents, multi-page jobs, printing after reboot and error recovery.
- Check removal instructions. Successful printing does not establish support for every device feature.
These hardware checks have not been performed by this catalog.

Risks and recovery
Data-loss risk: Possible; Bricking risk: Workflow-dependent. Route-based guidance, not hardware-tested; these outcomes are not inevitable for every device.
The repository provides uninstall.sh. The README explains reversing changes to ippusbd. Installation requires administrator privileges.
Evidence and maintenance
E2 · Author hardware claim / demonstration
The author's README reports USB testing on Apple Silicon macOS 26 and provides installation, removal and print-pipeline analysis. An author-hosted Claude session supports the AI-assisted-development classification. X access status is recorded separately. The author's original X post and replies were read, confirming their claim of using Claude through repeated trial and error.
Catalog hands-on testing: not performed. Independent reproduction: not verified.

- Repository license
- MIT glue + GPL-2.0 SpliX / patches
An unarchived repository or recent push does not prove a model works. Mirror migration does not mean development has stopped.
A root license or README declaration does not establish the same license for firmware, models, brands and third-party components.
