OpenWrt

Extend networking capabilities and maintenance options on supported routers with open firmware.

What changes for this device

Before

An old router's vendor firmware may lack desired features or no longer receive updates.

After

OpenWrt on an exactly supported hardware revision can provide routing, access-point or other networking roles.

A mature project does not mean a particular old model still supports the current release. Brand, appearance and retail name are insufficient for choosing an image: verify hardware revision, flash and RAM. First-install and upgrade images may differ. Recovery depends on the bootloader, serial access or vendor recovery mode. Do not experiment on the home's only network gateway without a confirmed recovery route.

A good fit for

People with backup networking who can verify device revisions and recovery documentation.

Not a good fit for

People with tiny-flash devices, no exact model entry, or no tolerance for temporary network loss.

Proposed reproduction checks

  • Check the exact device page, hardware revision, image type and checksum.
  • Back up configuration and device-specific partitions; confirm recovery tools.
  • Test WAN/LAN, wireless and rebooting. One successful connection is not a stability test.

These hardware checks have not been performed by this catalog.

Possible additional costs

  • Ethernet cable
  • UART/programmer may be needed

Prices have not been checked. An open-source license does not make hardware, hosting, electricity or cloud services free.

Risks and recovery

Data-loss risk: Expected; Bricking risk: Possible. Route-based guidance, not hardware-tested; these outcomes are not inevitable for every device.

Failsafe only applies when the device still boots. A non-booting unit may need model-specific TFTP/UART/programmer recovery. A factory reset is not universal unbricking.

Evidence and maintenance

E1 · Source code & deployment docs

The README links the Firmware Selector and installation information. Deployment scope must be narrowed to the exact model and hardware revision.

Catalog hands-on testing: not performed. Independent reproduction: not verified.

Repository license
GPL-2.0-only (other component licenses also apply)

An unarchived repository or recent push does not prove a model works. Mirror migration does not mean development has stopped.

A root license or README declaration does not establish the same license for firmware, models, brands and third-party components.
